Bjelasica – A mountain to fall in love with
This mountain beauty is magical in winter and a favorite destination for winter sports enthusiasts
It’s hard to resist the charms of Bjelasica, one of the most beautiful mountains in Montenegro—a mountain that captivates with its gentle nature and rich landscapes.
Located in the central-continental region, Bjelasica radiates evenly in four directions, forming a circular shape with a length and width of 30 km, covering an area of approximately 630 km².
The mountain stands out for its accessibility to the highest peaks, vast forest reserves, and abundant water streams. It boasts 10 peaks over 2,000 meters high, with its highest peak, Crna Glava, reaching 2,139 meters.
Unlike other mountains in the region, Bjelasica is of volcanic origin. This makes it green in the summer and white in the winter. Its enchanting landscapes leave visitors breathless, with Biogradsko Lake holding a special place. Nestled in the heart of Biogradska Gora National Park, this lake transforms into a fairytale-like scene when covered with ice in the winter. It’s no wonder it’s considered the most beautiful lake on the Balkan Peninsula and hailed as a temple of nature.
Another gem of Bjelasica is Ursulovačko Lake, located beneath Crna Glava. It challenges adventurers seeking to reach one of Montenegro’s most inaccessible lakes. Nearby lies Veliko Ursulovačko Lake, close to the village of Kurikuće, earning it the nickname Kurikućko Lake, alongside the smaller Malo Ursulovačko Lake, also called Blatina. The glacial Šiško Lakes—Veliko and Malo Šiško—are yet another treasure of this unique mountain. They are steeped in legends, with some believing the mud at the center of the lakes possesses healing properties. Mystical Bjelasica hides many fascinating stories and folklore, and its magical mountain huts strive to preserve the region’s traditions. Additionally, it is home to numerous endemic species of plants and animals.
Destination for active recreation
Montenegro’s Transversal 1 trail passes through Bjelasica, offering unforgettable hiking and trekking opportunities. Trail 1 route: Mojkovac (812 m) – Brskovo (1,433 m) – Bjelogrivac (1,970 m) – Veliko Šiško Lake (1,660 m) – Veliko Ursulovačko Lake (1,902 m) – Crna Glava Peak (2,139 m).
In winter, Bjelasica provides the joy of a modern ski resort. The newer Ski Center Kolašin 1600 is just 2.3 km away from the modernized Ski Center Kolašin 1450. The K7 cable car connects the two into a unified ski resort with 45 km of groomed ski slopes. Skiers can revel in unforgettable experiences, enjoying picturesque views and savoring local specialties by the fire in an idyllic winter setting. A unique treat for all the senses. This is a mountain people return to, a place to love in every season—but in winter, it becomes a magical wonderland that truly takes your breath away.
