Darlene Filipe, a 27-year-old from Haiti, has brought a touch of the Caribbean to Montenegro’s coast. With a warm smile and boundless curiosity, this young student has been living and studying in Bar for two months. She says she is enchanted by Montenegro – its nature, people, and the values she recognizes as close to those from her own upbringing.

“You have it all – the sea, mountains, kind and warm-hearted people. Montenegro is one of the best places to live,” says Darlene, describing the country as a Caribbean nation in the heart of Europe.

From Cetinje to Virpazar – breathtaking beauty

Her travels across the country have included historical landmarks like Cetinje, where she visited the palace of King Nikola, and spiritual sites such as the monastery near Danilovgrad. She’s particularly fond of Bar – for its calming atmosphere – and Virpazar, as well as Lake Skadar, which left a lasting impression on her.

A blend of cultures and a sense of Belonging

Born in Haiti and having spent most of her life in Istanbul, Darlene is no stranger to cultural diversity. That’s exactly what she has found in Montenegro too.

“I come from a Caribbean country where European, African, and American cultures blend. Turkey, where I currently live, is very different, but I truly enjoy being here. People are well-mannered, stylish, respectful, and family always comes first. Everything is balanced,” she explains.

She’s especially impressed by Montenegrin women: “They are beautiful and dress with style.”

Quality education and dedicated professors

Darlene is in Montenegro as an exchange student, attending classes at the Faculty of Business Economics and Law in Bar. She emphasizes the high quality of education and the professors’ dedication.

“I’m privileged to attend some of the classes. The professors give their best because they know that a good education means a better future for this country. I truly respect that.”

Montenegro in her heart, even after feparture

Although she will leave Montenegro in mid-June, Darlene will take more than just memories with her – new friendships, invaluable experiences, and a deep sense of peace.

“I found something special here,” she concludes.
