Nestled on the shores of the UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor, Perast is one of Montenegro’s most enchanting coastal towns. Known for its baroque architecture, Venetian palaces, and stunning views of the Adriatic, Perast is a place where history and beauty come together in every narrow street and stone façade.
Once a proud seafaring town of the Venetian Republic, Perast flourished in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today, visitors can admire its elegant churches and maritime heritage, stroll along its picturesque waterfront, and take a boat to the nearby islets of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George, two of the most iconic sights in the Bay of Kotor.
To preserve its unique cultural and historical character, the Municipality of Kotor has introduced a new measure: motor traffic is now permanently banned through Perast throughout the entire year. Until recently, the restriction applied only from May to September, but as of September 29, 2025, it has become a year-round rule. Only vehicles with special permits are allowed.
Local residents, represented by the Perast Community Council, strongly supported this initiative, and Mayor Vladimir Jokić and the Municipality of Kotor gave their full backing. As community representative Nikoleta Lindi explained, this decision will improve the daily lives of residents while also enhancing the experience for visitors, who will now be able to enjoy Perast in a quieter, safer, and more authentic atmosphere.
For travelers, this means that Perast can be discovered at its best – on foot. Walking its stone lanes, admiring the palaces of once-powerful naval families, and sitting by the sea with views of the islets is now even more special, with the timeless charm of Perast uninterrupted by traffic.
