A glimpse into history
The Church of St. Nicholas was built in 1735 in the Baroque style, while the adjacent Franciscan monastery was completed just a few years later, in 1739. The Franciscans remained active in the monastery until 1908. During their time there, they established a primary school, a nautical school, and the town’s first pharmacy—making the monastery an essential center of knowledge and community life. The church is dedicated to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors, a tribute to Prčanj’s rich maritime tradition. After suffering damage in the 1979 earthquake, the church was fully restored in 2011.
Architecture and Art
Built in the Baroque tradition, the church features a richly decorated interior. The main altar, crafted in Venice in 1766, is flanked by statues of St. Peter and St. Paul. The centerpiece painting, Madonna with Saints, is attributed to the school of Tiepolo, a prominent Venetian artist. Additional statues of St. Nicholas and St. Francis of Assisi further enrich the church’s sacred atmosphere. The monastery courtyard includes a traditional stone well, and inside the monastery you’ll find a parish office and library.
