Visiting caves always awakens the spirit of exploration because it has that attractive dimension of adventure. Irresistible and mystical. Caves are wonderful attractions, and those located in the sea take a very special place among them.
Sea caves are recognized as valuable and endangered habitats. They have different conditions compared to the open sea, which favors the development of a specific flora and fauna. Montenegro, among other things, can boast of speleological wealth. Various and unusual caves make it an attractive destination. Some of them are connected to the Adriatic Sea, which makes them interesting for diving enthusiasts.
The Blue Cave – the gem of the Mediterranean
The most famous and interesting sea cave in Montenegro is the Blue Cave. This incredible natural attraction is located on Luštica, near Herceg Novi (between Zlatna Luka and cape Mala Gora). The cave can be entered from two sides. There is a smaller opening on the south side, and a larger one on the southwest (height 3 m and width 15 m) through which boats and smaller ships can pass. The Blue Cave got its name from the turquoise blue color of the sea and the unique phenomenon that occurs when sunlight penetrates through the openings in the cave - it reflects off the surface of the sea and, due to reflection, creates a beautiful azure blue color on the walls of the chamber. Swimming in such an environment is a unique experience.
The Blue Cave was created at the foot of a 30-meter-high cliff and is the result of the impact of sea waves over thousands of years on porous rocks. The natural chamber, with a 9 meters high roof, offers indescribable enjoyment in the play of light. Such a composition of the cave creates an echo, producing a wonderful sound effect. Because of all this, it is not surprising that the Blue Cave is considered the gem of the Mediterranean.
Labyrinths of underwater caves
Due to the rocky coast line, along the entire coast there are several underwater caves of various sizes and at different depths. Exploring underwater caves, diving through labyrinths and crystal-clear water represents a real adventure and provides enjoyment in indescribable scenes.
One of the most popular underwater caves is the Jakubic cave, which is attractive to both beginners and experienced divers. In it, you can see interesting marine inhabitants such as octopus, lobster, sturgeon... Also, Poseidon's city is an interesting location, which consists of underwater caves located at different depths, and is decorated with an extremely rich natural architecture of the underwater world.
Another interesting diving location is the Sweet Cave. It is specific for the source of fresh water located in the cave itself, so during one dive you can swim in both salt and fresh water, and this makes a difference in visibility and temperature. Namely, fresh water is much colder and, compared to sea water, provides greater visibility. The Sweet Cave is located on the stretch between Cape Platamuni and Cape Bigovo.
We will also mention the Platamuni nature park, which covers 1087.13 ha and where there are significant habitats of protected sea grass called Neptune grass (Posidonia oceanica), as well as sea caves near Cape Platamuni and in Velika Krekavica bay. Velika Krekavica cave is an extremely important habitat in which various coralligenous organisms are found.
