Briefly about Lipa cave origin and development

Discovered some 200 years ago, Lipa cave and its constant sources of water have influenced the cultural development among local community. The interest of Montenegrin figures such as Njegoš and king Nikola gave it a historic dimension.

The first recorded visit took place in the mid-19th century. Henry Layard, a famous English adventurer visited the cave in 1839. This is the earliest written record of Lipa cave. Two years later, in 1841 a famous German travel writer and botanist, Wilhelm Ebel was unable to explore the cave at Njegos’s behest due to atrocious weather conditions. However, he did leave a written record of the cave based on the information passed on by the locals. In 1886, Pavel Rovinsky, famous Russian geographer, visited Lipa cave and wrote a detailed description of the cave in which he stated that Lipa cave is abundant in decorations unlike any other cave. His description was based upon his visit of the first 450 meters. Numerous visits, explorations, and records followed. In 1968, Lipa cave was declared a natural monument. Today, it’s a protected natural resource, i.e. a natural monument of cultural and historical heritage of Cetinje.

Lipa cave is located in Lipa Dobrska village, 5 km from the Old Royal Capital Cetinje, and that makes it an unmissable attraction that is within easy reach of the historic city. The proximity to the center of Cetinje, attractive beaches of Budva, as well as to the capital city Podgorica, make Lipa cave easily available and ideally positioned for all who seek a brief outing into the nature away from the everyday hustle and bustle.
