Hidden in inaccessible terrain, in the immediate vicinity of the main road Žabljak-Šavnik, there is a real gem - the Nevidio canyon. This natural pearl is about 2 km long, and the entrance is located at 935 m, while the exit is positioned at 810 m above sea level. Its very secretiveness was a challenge for explorers and adventurers. After several failed attempts, the story of the last unconquered canyon in Europe became known. It was only in 1965 that the members of the Mountaineering Society "Javorak" from Nikšić managed to pass through the canyon and reveal to the world the astonishing wild beauty - both cruel and amazing at the same time. Its width is less than one meter in some places, and it is surrounded by inaccessible and steep cliffs.
Experienced adventurers and guides from the Sports and Mountaineering Club "Free Climbers" - Cetinje say that the period from July to the end of August is ideal for visiting the Nevidio Canyon.
"The journey through the canyon typically spans about 3 hours; following the exit from the canyon, there is an additional 45-minute hike," they point out. This group comprising family members - father Rajko and sons Dejan and Vuk Popović - take pleasure in guiding tourists through the canyon.
"Participants are delighted by the canyoning adventure itself. Many of them find themselves surprised by the ascent and hike at the end of the canyon tour."
As they say, everyone can enjoy the canyon.
"It depends more on fitness than age. We recommend going through the canyon with expert guides who know all the details about it. Unlike others, this canyon is particularly suitable for tours with a larger number of participants, because during the passage through the canyon the intensity of movement is the same and the adventure takes place without major delays. It provides a continuous rush of adrenaline until the exit."
This adventure offers a unique experience, so the team of Free Climbers, even though they have been through the canyon countless times, never ceases to admire it.
"The Nevidio Canyon fascinates with the clarity of the water and the impressive narrowness of the rocks. It is special because it is characterized by the appearance of a mountain canyon – with towering cliffs raising 50 m on both sides covered with moss and smaller vegetation. Nevidio is also specific because, unlike other canyons in Montenegro, crossing it almost does not require technical equipment such as ropes. With experienced guides, one can go through it as if it were a natural water park - jumping into natural pools, going down natural slides, swimming and overcoming various obstacles. Because of all this, this spectacular canyon, known for its wilderness and pristine beauty, offers an unforgettable experience to adventurers and nature lovers."
Nevidio Canyon is also called Neviđbog (unchartered territory) by the inhabitants of this area. Namely, the Nevidio Canyon is a part of the Mala Komarnica river, and the Komarnica river in one part gets lost in a carved entrance and becomes invisible to the human eye.
To embark on this adventure, it is essential to be in good physical condition. Necessary equipment includes a helmet, a thick 5mm diving suit with a hood (to combat the low water temperature, ranging from seven to eight degrees), and appropriate footwear for navigating slippery rocks. The most important thing is that you have the desire to accept the challenges of this mysterious place and experience an unforgettable adrenaline adventure in secluded mountain passages.
Canyoning through Nevidio is most often described as a combination of sliding, swimming, climbing, jumping off waterfalls and jumping off cliffs into deep pools. The conclusion, however, is always the same – an unparalleled adventure and indescribable enjoyment in unspoiled nature.
