In the heart of Durmitor National Park, near the mystical Vražje Lake, artists have created the largest grass pictogram in the world – a monumental 400-meter artwork inspired by Montenegro’s medieval tombstones, stećci, which are protected by UNESCO.

The artwork depicts an ancient hunter aiming his bow at a chamois – a scene rich in symbolism. One interpretation suggests the hunter, with sun rays around his head, represents the Sun awakening nature (symbolized by the chamois or deer) with the Moon (the bow). The piece was crafted by a team from Novi Sad, Serbia, led by art professor Miloš Vujanović, with the help of local residents, including Žabljak’s own master scytheman, Aleksandar Šarović.

Unlike crop circles made by flattening grain, this pictogram was created by precision mowing the resilient mountain grass. Over several days, the team manually cut the grass with traditional scythes, following a detailed plan mapped with stakes and ropes. Sunlight then bleached the cut areas, making the artwork clearly visible from panoramic viewpoints – and even from passing cars.

Alongside the giant hunter, the team also created a labyrinth, connecting Durmitor to an ancient global symbol of spiritual journey, from the labyrinths of Knossos to those in medieval cathedrals. This year’s festival also introduced eco-painted rock drawings, such as a four-meter-long black salamander painted on a cliff near Momčilov Grad viewpoint, using natural pigments similar to those found in prehistoric cave art.
