Montenegro and Bulgaria are taking a major step toward bringing their capitals closer together. Officials from both countries have announced plans to launch a direct flight between Podgorica and Sofia, potentially as early as the upcoming 2025/2026 winter season.
The joint declaration was signed in Podgorica by Montenegro’s Minister of Transport and Maritime Affairs, Maja Vukićević, and Bulgaria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport and Communications, Grozdan Karadzhov. The agreement paves the way for a working group that will prepare the introduction of the route.
Currently, travelers between the two countries face a long overland journey of more than 600 kilometers, which takes at least 10–11 hours by car or bus. A direct flight would cut travel time to just over an hour, making weekend city breaks or combined coastal and cultural trips far more accessible.
For Montenegro, the new route would mean easier access for Bulgarian visitors eager to explore the Adriatic coast, the Bay of Kotor, and Montenegro’s mountainous national parks. For Montenegrin travelers, Sofia offers not only a lively capital city but also a gateway to Bulgaria’s ski resorts and cultural landmarks.
Officials emphasized that the connection will strengthen economic ties, promote cultural exchange, and enhance tourism opportunities between the two countries.
If finalized, this link between Podgorica and Sofia will add another convenient door for travelers to discover the richness of the Balkans in both directions.
